Challenging yoga pose 1 - Crane Pose

I did it! I mastered my first challenging yoga pose from my list! Granted it's the easiest of all of them, but I had to start somewhere!  I've been working on a variety of arm strength yoga poses to help build up my strength and balance. I now can confidently hold it for 10 breaths and even continue to balance with a baby and toddler trying to climb all over me :)

After 4 attempts to get a picture with my head in it, I gave up and went with the best one.  I love my Old Navy Compression Capris, so perfect for yoga!

This is something on my 101 Things in 1001 Days list, please check it out to see what else I'm hoping to accomplish.

blog swap!

I was so excited when my bff Holly (she blogs at Perfectly Imperfect) hosted a blogger swap for 101 in 1001 days/30 before 30/etc lists. The goal was to help another blogger complete something on their list. My blog partner was Amanda at Simple Girl, Simple Pleasures. She sent me these amazing reusable grocery bags to complete number 52 on my list (Make a switch to reusable grocery bags). I now have one more thing checked off my list, and you best believe I'll be shopping with these!!

(W thought these were for him, I told him he gets always gets new toys and these were for me...)

(Check back on Holly's site in the future as she may host another blog swap sometime....)

wine tasting

23. Go wine tasting (Mastropietro Winery, October 23, 2011)

Today A and I went wine tasting with my brother and his girlfriend. I've been wanting to go to this local winery for years because they have this sweet red wine that I love. On Sundays you're allowed to bring your own food so we got p'zones (super classy, I know!) and we enjoyed trying some different wines :) A and I shared a bottle of the Dolce Rosso while my brother and his girlfriend tried a different sweet red that was an elderberry wine. I also had a glass of their sweet white white (called "Sunset") which was a peach wine.

we have found a church home :)

56. Find a home denomination/church (February 27, 2011)

I didn't know what date to put, so I figured the first day we started attending together would suffice. I have felt like a piece has been missing from our lives because we haven't had a home church. We have attended the church I grew up in and the church Aaron grew up in and various other churches depending on where we were living, but none of them felt right. We have finally found a great fit and I couldn't be more excited. It's not too big, which is perfect, but there are a lot of things to get involved with. Plus there are lots of young couples with children (W is the youngest right now, but I know there will be more babies in the future!) This church is really into foreign missions and was actually the church I went to Haiti with in 2007 and then Aaron and I went with again in 2009. Now that we have a family I know we won't have a chance to do foreign missions, but I look forward to the chance to do something in our community.

I'm really excited to get involved and to have a church family in which to raise our family :)

(The above blanket is one that I won from Fill in the Blankie before W was born and I had it personalized. It has Psalm 127:3 around two edges - "Children are a gift from the Lord. They are a reward from Him," his name on the third side, and "Love, mommy and daddy" on the fourth side. I adore this blanket and I hope it becomes his favorite!)

visit to New York

70. Visit grandparents in New York (February 9-12, 2011)

This past week, we took a trip to New York to visit W's great grandparents (Oma and Opa) and his great great grandma (Nana). It was really special to have 5 generations together and something that is really rare. My Nana will be 96 this year, but she is doing great - still lives on her own! We were hoping to go down to the city, but it was too cold to have W outside so we're planning to go in September.
Nana, W & I, my mom, and my grandma. We were all looking at different cameras so I don't have a great picture, but I'm glad I got a few!
Nana with W. She loves babies and was so excited to hold him. She has 7 great great grandchildren but this is the first one she has met (and probably the only one as the rest live far away).
W was amazing in the car. He slept pretty much the whole time. He did have a major blow-out somewhere in PA, which was quite humorous for my mom and I. I managed to change him on the seat of the Traverse we borrowed because we couldn't find a place with a changing table!

You can visit my 101 Things List to check out more of what I plan to accomplish this year!

o christmas tree

14. Have a live Christmas tree (November 23, 2010)

I have never had a live tree, but I have always wanted to have one. Our last two apartments were simple too small for a live tree, so we stuck with our small, artificial tree. This year, though, Aaron surprised me by taking me to pick one out! We decided to go the day before Thanksgiving so we could get first pick, and I'm so glad we did. We have a beautiful, full tree!! Aaron and I both have a ton of ornaments because both of our families had traditions of giving Christmas ornaments every year (we will accumulate even more now that little boy has arrived!) W loves looking at the tree, it's such a joy to watch his eyes dart around looking at the lights :)

advent calendar

My brother and I grew up with an advent calendar that looked just like this, and so when Aaron and I got our own place, I just knew we had to have one of our own. Two years ago my sister-in-law and I started on this crafty project and I have only just now finished mine! I will say that making all of the ornaments and sewing the hook and eyes was the most time-consuming part, but I love how it turned out! Once all the ornaments are up on the tree, I'll take a final picture, but I don't want to jump ahead in the month :) I have two blank stockings on the tree as well, one for when our son arrives, and another for a future child...it would be easy to make more if God blesses us with more children!

christmas gifts

51. Buy a toy for Toys for Tots (Cinderella Puzzle and Dalmatian, November 5, 2010)
93. Make up a complete box for Operation Christmas Child (November 5, 2010)

I've been wanting to do both of these items for the past few years, but I always get caught up in the holiday season and I never remember to buy stuff on time. This year we are way on top of things! My church provided the boxes and the list of items to go in a box, so all we had to do was go shopping! While out shopping we were asked if we wanted to donate a toy to Toys for Tots and of course I said yes (refer back to my post on tithing). I also had bought the dalmatian to donate as well, so we were able to give two toys this year. Aaron and I decided to shop for a 5-9-year-old boy and we had a lot of fun picking out toys. The deadline is November 14th for the boxes, so I'd say we were pretty on top of it this year. I hope this is something we can do every year, I think it would be fun to go shopping with our kids and let them help fill boxes and pick out toys for other kids.

hair cut

46. Grow my hair long enough to donate it to Locks of Love (October 11, 2010)

I did it, I got all my hair cut off :) I measured out my ponytail when I got home, and it's just under 12 inches that I am able to donate! I love my hair and I'm happy that I got it cut. I feel lighter and I actually feel cute again...my long hair had me so depressed because it was so out of control. Hopefully this will be easy to maintain and easy for me to style. Aaron loves it too :)

craft project

I have been saving craft projects for a rainy day, and today happened to be that day (although there was no rain). I started with a mail sorter that I found on the blog Bright and Blithe. I won't go through the details, but you can check out the original directions here. This completes the first craft out of five for my 101 things list! I cannot wait to hang it up at our new place and hopefully be able to keep our kitchen table clean and organized. Our place is going to be overrun with baby stuff in a few months, so this should help me keep on top of the mess and paying things on time. My next craft is a mother's pin I'm going to make for my mom and my MIL for Christmas.

101 things

I originally started this blog as a place to update about my 101 Things list. It has turned into more of a personal blog, but I still update about my list as I finish items. My goal is to complete 20 items by the end of this year so I can be roughly halfway through my list. I realize this is a hefty goal, but here are some that are guaranteed to be checked off:
86. Get a bikini wax - My maternity bathing suit is cut much higher than any other swimsuit I've ever owned (very odd, I know) and so this is a must before vacation. I know this is probably TMI...
57. Get 2 stamps in my passport - I will be able to cross this off after vacation as I will have gotten my second stamp (different than the first).
87. Get a manicure or pedicure - The babymoon package we are getting on vacation includes my choice of a manicure or pedicure. I had a pedicure when I graduated high school, but I've never had a manicure! I'm looking forward to being pampered :)
41. Buy a ring I love - I plan to buy a turquoise ring on vacation because our son is going to *hopefully* be born in December and this is December's birthstone. I thought it would be a cute way to honor him, and I hope to get it engraved after he is born.
38. Buy a nice mattress - We are moving in August and we are buying a new mattress in September. I cannot sleep on our old mattress anymore and I am definitely done sleeping in the airbed.
44. Buy a real piece of furniture - We have plans to buy quite a bit of furniture as we move. Most of it is used, but it's real and not something that has been given to us. The only new piece we are planning on buying at this point is the changing table to match the crib.
10. Have a baby - Self explanatory, I don't imagine he'll hold on until 2011.
16. Make up wills - This is on my checklist to complete before the baby is born. I don't know the first thing about how to do this, but it's something we have to do.
81. Fill up a journal - My pregnancy journal will be complete by the end of the year! It's been fun filling it out so far :)
I realize this is only 9 things, but hopefully more will get added soon :) These are just the ones I plan on completeing right now!

ice cream & a party

63. Host a themed party (Tastefully Simple party - June 19, 2010)

The first picture is from the Tastefully Simple party I hosted back in June. They have amazing food, and I was so excited to get some cool stuff for hosting the party! Some of the things I got are Christmas gifts, but most of the stuff is for hubby and me :)

60. Make homemade ice cream (July 24, 2010)

This weekend, I also tried out my new ice cream maker and made my first ice cream! It didn't turn out perfect (or as I expected ice cream should be), but it was delicious. The recipe I made was Double Cookie Dough Ice Cream, from the blog Annie's Eats, which can be found here. Mine didn't quite look like hers... I have two other recipes I plan on trying in the coming weeks: Cake Batter Ice Cream and Mint Tea Gelato. Yum!

girl's weekend

71. Go to an Indians game (July 18, 2010)
96. Take pictures with someone in a photo booth (July 18, 2010)

This weekend was so much fun! It was a well overdue girl's weekend with the bestest :) We spent Saturday watching girly movies (Juno, Time Traveler's Wife, and When in Rome) and catching up on life. Holly was able to cross off have a movie marathon off her list and she completed her "J"movie with Juno. On Saturday I went to her church and then a group of us went to the Indians game. It was in the 90s and we were pretty much dripping sweat the whole game, but they won! In fact, they had a 4 game sweep of Detroit (pretty impressive for a Cleveland team :P) I hadn't been to an Indians game since high school so I had a lot of fun, not to mention we had amazing tickets (upper deck right behind home plate). While we were there, we also had a chance to get a picture in a photo booth. We had a hard time cramming the 4 of us in the booth, but we managed! The first and last one are my favorites!

tithing

Tithing has always been somewhat of a mystery to me, especially as a "poor" college student. I know that the Bible says to give the first of our fruits to God (Old Testament teaching), and specifically to give 10% of one's income to the church/temple (Numbers 18:26 is the most clear, but tithing appears elsewhere). Despite having it clearly spelled out, I have continued to be baffled as to how to make it work. Hubby and I do not belong to a church and we do not attend any one specific church regularly, so we cannot make any commitments, but I would still like to tithe. After some prayer and careful consideration, this is what I have come up with for tithing:
  • Give what we have in cash whenever we are at a church. This ranges from as little as a few dollars to larger bills. We rarely carry cash, though, so we cannot stop here.
  • Give when asked to donate to a charity at a place of business. I always used to feel guilty for saying "no" to a charity donation, but it's only usually $1 and I can always spare that. So far I have had 3 opportunities to donate this way!
  • Saving our change to donate to specific organizations/charities. For example, my parent's church has a penny collection. The pennies are collected each week and donated to a local shelter when the jar on the alter is full. Another example is the March of Dimes. They specifically collect dimes (although larger donations are accepted). Also, just random charities that come door to door collection change, or the Salvation Army tins at Christmas.

These are a few of the ways I feel as though I am "officially" tithing. What are some of your thoughts, and I would love to hear other creative ways that you are tithing. I can always add to my list and do more!

new hair :)

91. Get a haircut I love (March 31, 2010)

I replaced "Get a tattoo" with this one because I really don't want a tattoo (fake or real). I have gone back and forth for awhile, but I've made my final decision. Instead, I got a super cute haircut that I love :) This is the longest my hair has been and I was going to cut it all off, but Emily said she could make my length manageable so I could keep it long! I am so glad she was the one cutting my hair, because I really love it and I'm glad I didn't cut it short! Seriously this is the easiest style I have ever had. It requires me to dry my hair and use a wide barrel curling iron for like 5 minutes! Maybe I'll stop wearing my hair in a ponytail to work?

donating glasses

55. Find a place to donate old glasses (January 23, 2010)

I have had as stash of glasses and cases sitting in my old room for awhile. My mom has been cleaning my old room out so I figured I'd grab them and drop them off at the local grocery store. They have a box from the Lion's Club that takes old glasses and redistributes them to people. The first two are my old glasses (the second one is from middle school, lol). The third pair is my mom's old glasses :) She was looking for the pair she wore when my brother and I were little, but she was unsuccessful. They had HUGE frames!

tis the season

This break has been crazy, but I've gotten a lot accomplished. I still have a ton of homework to do, but I feel good about all I was able to do and not stressed out about what I have to get done. The above picture is the first of our Christmas decorations along with our only Thanksgiving decoration (a ceramic turkey Aaron painted in elementary school). I have since decorated the entire apartment and put up the Christmas tree.
I was told to try this recipe by a friend and I was more than overjoyed to try it out. It is a chai tea hot chocolate and I must say, it was delicious! This may be my new favorite winter drink. All that's in it is a packet of instant hot chocolate (mine happened to have mini marshmallows as well) and a chai tea bag. You can see my new Mistletoe Kisses candle from work which is amazing for Christmas! The first picture is the diffuser set in the same scent. Our apartment smells very festive :)

We tried this recipe we got from our wedding shower (finally) and I will admit we probably won't try it again. It's not that the recipe isn't good or that it didn't turn out well, we just didn't like the ingredients. The recipe is really simple if you're looking for something easy to try! If we were to try this again, we would follow the soup in the recipe and probably try different bread crumbs.

Penny's Chicken (101. Make five new recipes I've never made (2/5))

Velveeta Cheese
1 can cream of celery soup (we used cream of chicken, and I think this might have been one of the problems)
Italian bread crumbs
Chicken breasts (we used chicken tenders because that is what we usually buy)

Cut slices of Velveeta cheese and put on chicken in a shallow baking dish. Cover with bread crumbs (to your liking) and spread the cream of celery soup out evenly. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.

62. Bake 5 different loaves of bread (2/5)

This time we tried white bread for the Thanksgiving meal and it was pretty good. I made it the night before so I wouldn't have to worry about the mess and have it take up time and counter space, but it was a little hard by the time we ate it the next day. This was my first attempt at making bread start to finish from scratch (kneading and letting the dough rise), and it was so much fun but very time consuming. I followed this simple white bread recipe.

43. Buy a sturdy water bottle (November 27, 2009)

This "purchase" was rather unnecessary, but I have been wanting a good water bottle for quite awhile. We needed to cancel my rewards card because they were going to be charging us for a new year of extra rewards. Before we could cancel we had to use all the rewards that were on my card because they wouldn't carry over. It would have made more sense to get a gift card, but we would have had a lot of points leftover that we wouldn't be able to use. Instead I found this cool digital water bottle and Aaron said I could get it. It calculates how much water I need to drink in a day based on my weight and then keeps track of how much I drink (percent per hour, percent towards my goal, and total ounces). I know it's really silly, but I'm totally in love with it! It's probably not all that practical as it cannot be tipped over or water spills out of the straw and it cannot hold anything but water, but I love it (and it's BPA free, which is even more to love about it!)

57. Host a holiday meal for the family (Thanksgiving - November 26, 2009)

My family and Aaron's parents came to our place for Thanksgiving this year. Aaron had to work on Thanksgiving and we both had to work early on Black Friday, so it we weren't able to make it home. We had bacon wrapped turkey, hash brown casserole with bacon, stuffing, homemade bread, green beans, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and pumpkin roll. I feel so blessed that we could all gather together as a family and share the day together. I'm really hoping we can make it home for Christmas and Christmas Eve, but we won't know until it gets closer. We are planning a trip to New York for New Year's (as long as Aaron can get off of work) and spending a few days at my grandparent's.

Many blessings,
-Ashley

new food

101. Make 5 new recipes that I've never made (1/5) -Ranch Oyster Crackers

Now I cheated a little bit with this first recipe, because it is something I have had before, but I've never made it. Ranch Oyster Crackers is one of my favorite snacks, and I honestly haven't had it since my high school graduation party (it was on my list of "must have" foods). I had to bring something to share to our work meeting tonight and I went with these crackers because they are really simple and really cheap (cheaper if you have all the ingredients on hand). I had to buy oyster crackers, lemon pepper, and ranch dip because I didn't have those items but my total only came to just over $4 for all of it (and the lemon pepper I can use again).
Ranch Oyster Crackers
12-16 ounce bag of oyster crackers
1 package Hidden Valley Buttermilk Ranch salad dressing mix
1/4 tsp. lemon pepper
1 tsp. dill weed (I love dill weed so I use a lot, but you can cut it back to a 1/2 tsp)
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
3/4 cup - 1 cup vegetable oil (this is dependent on what size bag of crackers you use)
  • Combine oil and dry ranch mix in a small bowl
  • Add all the other spices with the oil and ranch mix, combine well
  • Pour over crackers in oven safe dish (I used a Pyrex dish, you could use a bowl as well)
  • Put in a warm oven for 15-20 mins, stirring halfway through

I have a lot left from the meeting, so I think I'm going to bring the rest to class on Thursday because we're having a luncheon. We're supposed to bring a dessert, but I do not have the time, nor the money, to make something else. Aaron and I don't get paid until the day after Thanksgiving, so I'm not sure where the money for the bills we have due before then is going to come from. I know that God will provide, and my faith is in Him. It doesn't help that Aaron is in Alabama for a work trip, so he is spending money on food and gas to be there and he is not working during that time. I have been trying to pick up extra hours at work when they ask me to do so, but I am so exhausted from all the homework I have that I have a hard time going to work on my "days off". This year has been tough, but I know we only have a few short months left of being this tight for money. Aaron should make 30k at his seasonal job next year (could be 50k if he really works his route well!). Greater things are yet to come :)

Many blessings,
-Ash

party update

58. Make sangria (October 10, 2009)

It took me a long time to find a glass jar that was big enough and within our budget, but in the end I found what I was looking for. In this particular recipe there was: 3 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon, 64 ounces of apple juice, 1 grapefruit, 1 orange, 1 lemon, 1 lime, 1 pear, and 1 apple. Everyone really enjoyed the sangria (including me!), but I think the grapefruit is a bit overpowering as it has now been soaking for over two days. I would love to try another recipe sometime (definitely on a smaller scale), and not include grapefruit. Overall I thought it was a huge success and now I have a super cute glass jar to use!! I can see this being useful in the summer for big batches of sweet tea with lemons and limes!!

78. Host a party (October 10, 2009)

Our first official party was a huge success! We were all a little squished in our small apartment (and a tad bit warm), but we managed to find seating for 12 people! We had pasta for dinner with salad and garlic bread and we drank the sangria with dinner. Following that we started drinking the different wines that everyone brought. We had: Dolce Rosso (a sweet red wine), Pink Catawba (a sweet blush wine), White Zinfandel, Riesling, a homemade Elderberry wine, and Dornfielder Max (a sweet German wine). I borrowed my mom's cheese plate (which I wish was mine!) and we had White Cheddar, Gouda (this was my first time trying this and it was amazing), Colby Jack, Baby Swiss, Muenster, and I made an herb cream cheese spread.

We had one scary moment when the paramedics had to be called, but everything was okay and it turned out to be a non-emergency (better to be safe than sorry!) I'm so glad my friends were able to come and share this time with us because it has been so long since I've seen most of them. I'm looking forward to many more fun adventures in the future!
