My decision to go green

I have always been very concerned about the environment and the toxins that are put into my body and my son's body (my husband refuses to be a green convert so i can't count him in!). My original plan in life was to become an environmental geologist, obviously that wasn't the path I traveled down but it's still a dream I have for the future.

I have spent the last month really evaluating the products in our house and how I could help our family be greener without breaking the bank. I have always been diligent about recycling but unfortunately we don't have access to recycling here (we have a commercial address so they won't pick up and there aren't any collection sites nearby). I still save batteries and medications to be properly disposed of because they only take up a small amount of space.

I have several posts planned for the coming months that will unfold how we are becoming green. You can expect to read about my decision not to cloth diaper (and the alternatives I have found), making my own dishwasher detergent, making my own laundry soap, composting, making my own beauty products/my fav safe beauty products, and being green on a budget!

(A has started calling me a hippie, but so far he has been on board with the changes I've made... As long as I don't make him use organic toothpaste!)

The below pic is of W trying out our new energy efficient LG dryer... Don't worry, he is always supervised

My sister composts and I know it's eliminated how much trash they have immensely! They also have rain barrels that are extremely convenient--Jon got them on eBay I think and painted them so they match their house more. I know it saves them on their water bills in the spring a lot! I can't wait to read about the changes you've made!

And that pic is way too cute :)

Yay!! My husband and I try to be as green as possible, and I love reading about others doing the same thing!

PS- Tom's of Maine toothpaste is absolutely awesome! My husband wanted his own tube after trying mine one time

I am very excited to hear! I might have to learn before you post though! I make my own cleaners for the house and cloth diaper but thts pretty much it. Ryan calls me a tree hugging hippie as well and wants nothing to do with it, so I feel your pain there!

Yes if you need tips on composting just ask. We have been composting for 2 years and it is great and amazing what you can compost -- like coffee grounds and filters and dryer lint! Once it has been composted down Jon uses it as fertilizer for our garden.

And we got the rain barrels on Craigslist. They are set to directly flow to our garden for convenient watering, and then we can empty them to water our plants out front. We hardly ever have to use our house water in the summer for outdoor watering.
