I apologize for the brief nudity. This has been my favorite piece of art since I first was introduced to it in a Gender in the Bible class in undergrad. I love it because it is very different than other depictions of David and Bathsheba which usually focus on Bathsheba in some way inviting David to look at her. This painting is much more historically accurate in the manner of bathing (obviously not historically accurate in the fact that Bathsheba was not white, but I'll save that rant for another day). As you can see, David is peaking at her and he can barely contain himself! Bathsheba is admittedly in a rather provocative pose not typical of one taking a bath, but for a woman taking a bath, she should be allowed to do as she pleases in privacy!
I love looking at religious art and seeing how people have interpreted the Bible. I'm much more intrigued by contemporary pieces, because they go against the flow of what is traditionally accepted about the Bible. I wonder if Aaron would ever allow this piece to be hung on our wall??
The artist is Jean Leon Gerome and the title of the painting is Bathsheba from 1889.
